Carbon Fiber auto parts?

Many automotive enthusiasts (mostly tuners) replace their hoods, trunk lids, doors, fenders etc. with carbon fiber replacements. I understand that carbon fiber is much lighter than the OEM metal parts, but is the weight difference significant enough to spend $400+ (depending on manufacturer) on a C.F. hood replacement (or any part for that matter) that will probably look like crap after a year of sun and weather exposure anyway? Yes, every little bit helps, but is carbon fiber really worth it?
