Aluminium to Carbon Fiber Bike?

I've been riding for about a year on an aluminum entry-level bike, and I've had lots of people telling me I should make the change to carbon fiber soon as I've been getting stronger. My main concern is the durability of CF bikes. I've heard a few horror stories about CF frames suddenly giving way or becoming totally unusable after a crash or fall. I don't want to go and spend a large sum of money on a CF bike, only to have it all wasted a few months later in a crash. Can anyone offer any insight into this? Btw, the bike I've been looking at is the Specialized Tarmac.
